An antique early 20th Century Folk art memory jug.
This double handles terracotta pot has been completely covered in pieces of tiles in a mosaic design.
Memory jugs originate from the late 19th and early 20th Century as a craft which originated in African and African-American burial practises. These jugs migrated to America as part of the slave trade and became popular with the craft pursuits of the Victorians.
This example measures 22cm H x 14cm W.
It has some damage on one side, where some of the tiles have fallen away. This is reflected in the price.
